With a lot of questions and concerns coming in regarding Mike Harris receiving a library naming, and an honorary degree at this year’s 2010 Nipissing University Convocation, NUSU would like to clear some things up. NUSU is an apolitical organization that promotes academic and social growth. The word apolitical implies that in any political dilemmas or controversies that may occur, the student union will remain neutral. NUSU does not support or is supportive to any specific political party.
Library:
Although not officially announced, there have been some rumors floating around that hint towards our new Learning Library being named after former Premier Mike Harris. It isn’t the naming of the library that concerns NUSU, it is the library itself. NUSU is happy to see the university capital projects (Library, Athletics, and Residence) underway as they make this university a more enjoyable place for our students. We are fully supportive of building this institution into a better place, especially in tough economic times and government cutbacks in post-secondary education.
Honorary Degrees:
NUSU is excited to see our graduates walk across the stage at this year’s convocation. A lot of time, money and hard work will finally pay off for our students. However, it is not in NUSU’s purview to ridicule or support opinions towards individuals being awarded, or not awarded with honorary degrees. At Nipissing University a committee handpicks from a wide variety of candidates, which is followed by a votes on the Senate and Board of Governors. We would like to remind all attending the convocations to be supportive of our students on this special day.
